Teenage Kicks

"If as a teenager you feel music this powerfully, it is very hard to grow up and grow out of it. You are likely in fact to spend the rest of your life searching for similar experiences, even at ages when other life experiences should have suggested that there is a kind of immaturity in feeling so strongly about, what is after all, merely music..."

Paul Morley
"Words & Music"

Boxing in Boracay: Karengkeng VS. Monkey Pacquiao

This was the match that nobody saw.

Set against the crystal clear blue waters and fine white sands of Boracay, on the summit of Mount Luho is where the action took place. To the left of the ring was Ms. Karengkeng, clad in a sexy black bikini complete with knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet that had slipped off at some point. To the right, next to the Tasmanian Devil (ehem, *relative*), bats, wildcats and dinosaur ducks is Monkey Pacquiao, standing disadvantageously behind the handicap of a cage.

Ting-ning-ning-ning-ning!!!
Rrround One!

Karengkeng sashays across the ring and towards the beast, eager to survey her opponent at close range. A harmless fuzzy he seemed to be, bringing the corners of her lips to rise into a smile.

"Why, hello there, lit---"

KARPOWWWW!

In shock by the sudden and unforseen blow, Karengkeng makes a dash for the restroom to examine the damage. It was a good thing not a soul had witnessed the scene, but here's the evidence just the same:

Karengkeng 0,...

Following Jack the Ripper

Went on the Jack the Ripper walking tour to retrace the infamous slasher's footsteps as guided by the world's authority on JTR and England's top crime historian, Donald Rumbelow. Although London's East End has been enjoying a the-place-to-be reputation in recent times, it's somewhat retained that dodgy and eerie look at night. Too bad there aren't any bloodstains on the pavement...

It was cold and most of the places were very dimly lit so this was all I could manage.

London 2008

This was a few months back when I went with the Mothergoose and did the typical tourist hop on-hop off double decker ride. We also took a number of tours and checked out the Square Mile -- the original City of London prior to the Great Fire of 1666 - which to this day remains the trade/financial district. Without any guidebooks to aid my failing memory, I've unfortunately forgotten most of the details but those I do remember are noted on the photos' descriptions. Also went around Soho for a more musical

This Feels More Like XB 102

After a getting a major dose of the 80's with Duran Duran's performing in Manila again last week after 20 years, guess who decides to pop in the station today?!

A Flock of Seagulls' Mike Score (+ a new band member), Real Life's David Sterry and When In Rome's Mike Floreale! I'm not too keen on the last 2 bands though, but A Flock of Seagulls did make quite an impact back then. And who can forget the HAIR? But 20 years and 100 pounds later, the business in front has grown out to maintain the party in the back, making him look more worthy of being called...Steven Seagull har har

Duran Duran - Plex, Plex, Plex!

Though it was a promotional tour for their new album, the mostly sang their classics. It was disappointing though that they didn't do New Moon on Monday, Is There Something I Should Know, The Chauffeur and Careless Memories. Skin Trade would've a major treat, too.

Duran Duran - Rio

I FINALLY got to see them after missing their concert in Manila 20 years ago! Simon's lost some of the extra blubber he gained over the years, John's good looks still are there, despite the fact that he now resembles a dried fish. Nick's still the prettiest and Roger remains a madman on drums. Original saxman was present too, leaving Andy the only absent member which I thought was a shame.

With the exception of a handful of new songs they performed, the whole evening felt like a time warp. They've managed to keep it together and sounded exactly the way did back in the day. Aylabyu, Saymon!!

Capital Radio London

My recent trip to the UK had me in a series of meetings, one of which was with XFM, the indierock station operated by Capital Radio London. XFM is just one of the stations they run, the others being of different formats - classical, hip-hop, rock and pop. The guys also gave me a tour of their "brand rooms," which would make anyone in local radio drool and turn an envious shade of green.

Oh, and I thought I saw the Kaiser Chiefs step out of one of the meeting rooms.

After our pleasant little chit chat, the guys from XFM were quite amazed at how Ricky Gervais (who happens to be their former colleague) has gained a somewhat iconic status as a MUSICIAN over here and decided to invite me to their event in a few nights' time. What the connection here was, I have no idea. But in any case, I was grateful. The event was at the Brixton Academy where the Furtureheads and a couple of newbies were playing. I was given 4 tickets and figured this was a perfect time to get together with London-...

Churches of Bohol

In a span of 1.5 days, Nena and I got to see some 4 awe-inspiring heritage churches. And since I'm still too lazy to write, I'm lifting the descriptions of the net :D

BACLAYON CHURCH
The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Baclayon is considered to be one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. It is one of the best presevred Jesuit built churches in the region, although in the 19th century, the Augustinian Recollects added a modern facade and a number of stone buildings that now surround the church.

The first Spanish missionaries or doctrineros in the region, Fr. Juan de Torres and Fr. Gabriel Sanchez, first settled in Baclayon in 1595. Shortly after their arrival, a visita was erected on the spot.

Although Baclayon was the first seat of the Spanish Jesuit missionaries, fear of Moro mauraders soon forced them to move their headquarters more inland, to Loboc. Only in 1717, Baclayon became a parish, and construction of a new church commenced. Some 200 native ...

Ancestral Homes of Bohol

Our trip to Bohol was not the of the usual Panglao-hanging, River-cruising variety. And though we made sure we got to see the Chocolate Hills and the adorable Yoda-looking tarsiers, most of the short 48 hours we were there were spent checking out old churches (next album) and ancestral homes.

There are approximately 67 ancestral homes in the historic town of Baclayon alone, dating back to the Spanish period up to the 20th century. In 2002, a province-wide road-widening project threatened to demolish many of these magnificent homes which stand along the national highway. Thanks to BAHANDI (the Baclayon Ancestral Homes Association), a self-help neighborhood organization, these houses that form part of Bohol's (and our nation's) cultural heritage were preserved.

BAHANDI continues their efforts today by organizing various cultural events and advocating the preservation of historical buildings in town. Some of their members have even opened up their ancestral homes to both local and...

Bohol At Last

I've been wanting to see Bohol for as long as I can remember. Even before I was born, our house had always been run by Boholanos and continues to be until this day. Everytime they'd come home from a short vacation, they would bring back stories about their excursions to the Chocolate Hills and the native Tarsiers, about how calm and peaceful it is in their part of the country, and how I should visit the place they're from, seeing that I do quite a bit of traveling. So when an invite from Nena, a sort of long lost friend, popped up on my screen, I eagerly considered the possibility.

I'm really glad that I decided to go. Not only did I finally get to visit the typical tourist-must sees (though passing on the Loboc River Cruise) they have so raved about, but I also discovered so much more about the place - the centuries-old churches and the gorgeous ancestral homes - places that Bohol isn't typically known for. Plus, I also sort of got to give back to the kind, wonderful people who hav...
